PESA WA Technical August lunch talk-Natural Hydrogen Exploration and production

Thursday, 19 August, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm (Australia/Perth time)

$39.00 – $99.00

Guest Speaker(s): Avon McIntyre

Avon McIntyre is a field geologist masquerading as a petroleum geologist. After finishing his PhD in New Zealand on onshore Taranaki Basin stratigraphy, he joined Australian Geological Survey for 4 years and spent much of that time mapping and sorting out outback geology in central Australian deserts. Then 2 years with PGS as a seismic interpreter before joining Shell in Australia in 2008 as an Explorer.  After stumbling on the subject of Natural Hydrogen in 2015 he has been studying it as a part-time hobby, separate from Shell activities.  Released from Shell as of mid-2021, he is able to work full-time on this subject and is hunting for potential Hydrogen accumulations areas in Western Australia.

PESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 19th August

Natural Hydrogen Exploration and production

Presented by Avon McIntyre

Hydrogen is increasingly featured in the renewable energy transition narrative as a potential replacement for fossil fuels.  While most of the attention is given to Hydrogen generated from renewable electricity such as solar or wind (Green Hydrogen) or synthesised from methane with the carbon dioxide byproduct sequestered underground (Blue Hydrogen), naturally occurring instances of Hydrogen in the subsurface have not yet reached the same level of public awareness.  The discovery of an accumulation of 99% pure Hydrogen in Mali (Borakebougou field) proves that natural occurrences of Hydrogen are not only possible but could produce at a fraction of the cost of Green Hydrogen.  The geological controls for a natural Hydrogen accumulation are not fully understood but similarities between the geology of the Mali accumulation and many parts of Australia pose an intriguing question; Could we be serendipitously located in the right place and time for a new and disruptive chapter in the energy transition journey?
