Abstract
Hydrogen is increasingly featured in the renewable energy transition narrative as a potential replacement for fossil fuels. While most of the attention is given to Hydrogen generated from renewable electricity such as solar or wind (Green Hydrogen) or synthesised from methane with the carbon dioxide byproduct sequestered underground (Blue Hydrogen), naturally occurring instances of Hydrogen in the subsurface have not yet reached the same level of public awareness. The discovery of an accumulation of 99% pure Hydrogen in Mali (Borakebougou field) proves that natural occurrences of Hydrogen are not only possible but could produce at a fraction of the cost of Green Hydrogen. The geological controls for a natural Hydrogen accumulation are not fully understood but similarities between the geology of the Mali accumulation and many parts of Australia pose an intriguing question; Could we be serendipitously located in the right place and time for a new and disruptive chapter in the energy transition journey?
