SSIG – The Coals of the South Perth Basin

While our European friends may not be able to get enough coal right now, over here at PESA WA we have oodles of this little compressed, organic, black rock of happiness. Over four hundred meters of it in fact! And we’re going to let PESA WA members spend a few hours admiring it for the bargain basement price of $10. We have not just one, but two cored sections of Permian coal from the south Perth Basin for you to admire, along with overbanks, point bars, conglomerates and organic-rich shales. Come and examine the rarely seen CRCH1 and CRCH3 cores from the Vasse Shelf at the next SSIG meeting and look at the age equivalents of the Kingia Fm (from the north Perth Basin) and see the remnants of the Glossopteris swamps (and ‘forests’) that were deposited in the hinterland of the Early Permian landscape.

We’ll also be enlisting the talents of GSWA geologist Charmaine Thomas and Alan Millar to guide us through the section and put the cores in context with the depositional history of the south Perth Basin Permian sequence. At a mere $10 per PESA member you’d better book early as this one will be selling faster than coal briquettes on a cold Germanic day.

At 4pm there is chance to network with the other attendees and continue the discussion over drinks. PESA supplies nibbles, but drinks are at your own expense.
