PESA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group (SSIG) Meeting – February

Friday, 24 February, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (Australia/Perth time)

Free – $10.00

PESA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group meeting

24th of February, 1 – 4pm Carlisle core library

4pm Balmoral Hotel, Victoria park

Salt Tectonics in Australian Sedimentary Basins

Interest in salt deposits in sedimentary basins has increased dramatically in recent years because of its potential role as a seal for natural hydrogen and helium accumulations, and as a site for the storage hydrogen and other gases. Although salt is present in a number of Australian basins, there are relatively few studies that document the evolution of salt structures in the context of wider research that has developed rapidly over the past 20 years.

On Friday 24 February (1.00 pm to 4.00 pm) a special session of the Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group at the Perth Core Library, 37 Harris St, Carlisle, led by Vincent Crombez, Fionna McNee and Chris Elders, will examine cores from mineral and petroleum wells in the Canning and Office basins that have penetrated thick salt sequences. This will provide us with the opportunity to investigate the composition and deformational fabrics in mobile and non-mobile salt, as well as the underlying and overlying stratigraphic successions.

As is tradition, the SSIG workshop will be followed by drinks at 4.00 pm at the Balmoral Hotel, Victoria Park.  PESA supplies nibbles, but drinks are at your own expense.

A full day Salt Tectonics Workshop, led by Chris Elders, will also be held on Thursday the 23rd of February.  It will examine current thinking on the evolution of salt structures and apply these concepts to examples of salt structures from the Petrel, Vulcan, Canning, Officer and Amadeus basins. Members who have already registered for the full day workshop can attend the SSIG core workshop on Friday the 24th of February for free by registering below.

Don’t forget to book early as we have a hard limit of 35 attendees and every previous SSIG meeting has been fully booked out.
