PESA QLD: Lunch Presentation and AGM, 17th March – Pascal Asmussen

Thursday, 17 March, 2022 @ 12:15 pm - 2:00 pm (Australia/Brisbane time)

Free – $95.00

Guest Speaker(s): Pascal Asmussen

Pascal Asmussen Pascal's research interests are diversified over various aspects of the Earth system, including geology, geomorphology, climate, soil and anthropogenic modifications in the context of spatial data analysis and interpretation. Pascal holds a BSc in Geography from the University of Hamburg (Germany), a MSc in Earth Sciences from the University of Hamburg (Germany) and a PhD from the Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia). His PhD research on multi-method sediment provenance analysis focussed on the integration of U-Pb thermo- and geochronometer with novel techniques in image analysis and dimension reduction methods. The project was in cooperation with the Geological Survey of Queensland (DNRME, GSQ) and the Geological Survey of New South Wales.

This month PESA Queensland welcomes Pascal Asmussen to present a technical luncheon entitled “A regional marker tool for the Walloon Coal Measures (Surat Basin) using detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology”

The Technical Lunch will be held at the Brisbane Hilton Hotel, in the Victoria Room with access from the Hilton Main Foyer on Level 6.

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the PESA QLD Branch will be hosted prior to the commencement of the Technical Lunch.

For detailed directions, see explanation below.

Please note the Early Bird ticket pricing cut-off times described below.

Presentation Abstract:

A regional marker tool for the Walloon Coal Measures (Surat Basin) using detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology

The coal seams within the Walloon Subgroup (WSG, Surat Basin, Australia) are a significant target for Coal Seam Gas (CSG) production and the identification of the boundary with the overlying Springbok Sandstone (SST) is critical to the stratigraphic framework of the basin, as well as the identification of groundwater flow units potentially associated with this boundary. Identification of the contact on a local (tenement) and regional (basin) scale between the SST and WSG is challenged by (i) overall lithological similarity of the units (macro- and microscopically, whole rock geochemistry, wireline signature), (ii) lateral heterogeneity of lithologies on a regional scale due to lateral facies and depositional environment variation in the uppermost WSG and lowermost SST and (iii) lack of consistent regional stratigraphic markers like erosion surfaces or correlated tuff beds. Sediment provenance analysis via detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology allows to constrain spatial and temporal changes in sediment provenance by sampling across stratigraphic units along a lateral transect, and can aid in large scale stratigraphic correlations. Here we present the results of detrital zircon distributions from 26 samples that were sampled from four wells along a 300 km transect from the eastern Eromanga Basin to easternmost extent of the Surat Basin. Our data show a brief pulse of basement derived material at the base of the SST which is interrupting the predominant volcaniclastic sediment provenance in the SST and WSG. This brief change in zircon provenance is interpreted as a precursor to higher energy depositional environments in the SST and can be utilised as a regional marker across the Surat and Eromanga basin, suggesting a potential change in source provenance and basin dynamics associated with the SST – WSG boundary.

PESA QLD 2022 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the PESA QLD Branch will be hosted prior to the commencement of the Technical Lunch.

Members are encouraged to attend the AGM to have their say with the PESA QLD committee.

PESA QLD are always interested to have active involvement from our membership… and what better way than to take up a position on the PESA QLD Committee!  Interested members who are keen to become a committee member are encouraged to lodge a nomination form (see link below).  Any member is invited to nominate for any of the available roles detailed on the Nomination form.  Any questions, please email qld-secretary@pesa.com.au

Hilton Covid Safe Policy

  • At this time, we wish to advise that the Queensland Government has mandated only fully vaccinated people are able to enter restricted areas as identified in the Public Health Directive from the 17th December 2021.  At the Hilton Brisbane, restricted areas include Vintaged Bar + Grill, Executive Lounge, and all event rooms (including level 5 foyer), and proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required for entry to these areas of the hotel.
  • Proof of vaccination can be added to the Queensland Check-In App. It is already a requirement that you use the App to Check-in when you visit a venue, and a Hilton Hotel team member will check with you to ensure compliance with the State Government mandate.
  • Guests staying at the hotel will not have to be vaccinated for accommodation purposes. However, they will not be able to enter and remain in Vintaged Restaurant and Bar or attend an event. Only fully vaccinated people can go into those parts of the hotel ‘as above’.
  • Masks must be worn at all times in hospitality venues except when seated. This includes pubs, clubs, restaurant, cafes, food courts and other venues where a person buys and consumes food, drinks and ready to eat meals.
  • Guests will be required to take a seat at a table upon arrival, and pre-lunch drinks will be served at the table.

The venue location can be accessed by two means:

1) Entry from Queen Street Mall
Enter the lifts located just to the left of Mick O’Malley’s Irish Pub, and take the lifts to Level 6.  Once you exit the lifts, the Victoria Room is immediately to the left.

2) Entry from Elizabeth Street
Enter the foyer located on 190 Elizabeth Street, and take the lifts to Level 6 (Main Foyer).  The Victoria Room is located in the back of the main foyer towards the right as you walk past Vintaged Restaurant.
