PESA QLD: Lunch Presentation, 23rd June – David Lowry

Thursday, 23 June, 2022 @ 12:15 pm - 2:00 pm (Australia/Brisbane time)

Free – $100.00

Guest Speaker(s): David Lowry

David Lowry David Lowry has an MSc (Hons) from Auckland University and has worked as a field geologist for Geological Survey WA, as a well site geologist, and as an exploration geologist for WAPET, Lasmo, Sagasco and Origin Energy. He now consults from his home in the bush. Particular interests are prospect risk analysis, seals, geochemistry, and hole stability. Peripheral interests have included speleology, ocean cruising and redclaw aquaculture. David has been a familiar face at many PESA functions over the years, having previously taught at PESA sponsored short-courses and presenting at PESA technical lunches.

This month PESA Queensland welcomes David Lowry to present a technical luncheon entitled “Improving petroleum system models in the Eromanga Basin, Queensland”

The Technical Lunch will be held at the Brisbane Hilton Hotel, in the Victoria Room with access from the Hilton Main Foyer on Level 6.

For detailed directions, see explanation below.

Presentation Abstract:

Improving petroleum system models in the Eromanga Basin, Queensland

Some components of our petroleum system models in the Eromanga Basin are poorly constrained because of lack of data. Rather than give up, this talk shows how to scrounge disparate data to have a stab at answering some difficult issues.

Structural timing. When did closures close?  This can be partly answered by combining outcrop geology, seismic sections, stripping estimates and paleomagnetism. This is done for the Curalle anticline and it suggests that this large inversion anticline grew around the Late Cretaceous and again around the Late Miocene.

How did surface temperature vary in the Tertiary?  Australia drifted north getting to warmer latitudes but the planet cooled down. Which dominated?  The Wygrala (1989) module incorporated in Petromod software seems to do a poor job of tracking surface temperature for the Eromanga. If warming dominated there is the possibility of second period of generation charging young structures in the Late Tertiary.

If a stripping estimate is derived from a sonic log, the problem remains as to how to distribute the stripping in time.  A simple approach is to draw a straight line from 90 Ma (end Winton; maximum burial) to present day. A more geologically plausible approach is developed here using data from the Curalle study.

These embellishments make a difference to models of sites in the axis of the basin where stripping is limited.
