Presentation Abstract:

Accessing data from the GSQ Open Data Portal using the Application Programming Interface

Have you ever been frustrated trying to find the information you are looking for in the Queensland Open Data Portal? Do you need to know how you can refine your results by building custom displays and queries of the data? Then this is the talk for you!

This evening presentation will consist of two short talks which will explore the Queensland Open Data Portal and give a hands on demonstration of the API.

An API is the acronym for Application Programming Interface, which is software that allows two different software programs to talk to each other.

PESA members should now be familiar with the new Queensland Open Data Portal, this session will demonstrate how to access the data and reports stored on the portal via direct links from their own computers and software that allows you to build custom displays and queries of the data.

We are going to keep the talks as short introductions to the ideas, with the presenters available for questions at the end and afterwards during the social drinks.

Kate Wathen-Dunn

In this talk, we will introduce the GSQ Open Data Portal website and demonstrate how to search, find and download data of interest. We will then build on this foundation to introduce the Open Data Portal’s API and discuss the benefits of using it.

Simon Atkinson

Simon will then demonstrate how to connect to the GSQ Open Data Portal using the Microsoft Desktop PowerBI application to display and query the data.

Microsoft Desktop PowerBI is available as a free download.

All attendees will be given a copy of the PowerBI project file.
