PESA QLD: July Taroom Trough / Bowen Basin Core Workshop – Interpreting Three-Dimensional Fluvial and Shoreline Architecture from Core, Depositional Analogues, and Forward Stratigraphic Models

Wednesday, 29 July @ 11:30 am - Thursday, 30 July @ 4:00 pm (Australia/Brisbane time)
$100.00 – $600.00

Guest Speaker(s): Dr Boyan Vakarelov

Boyan Vakarelov is the founder of SEDBASE, a cloud-based platform that helps geoscientists manage subsurface uncertainty using depositional analogues, dimensional datasets, and integrated decision-support tools.

An internationally recognised expert in shallow-marine sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy, Boyan brings more than 20 years of applied research and industry-focused experience. His work focuses on linking depositional process understanding to improved subsurface prediction in data-limited settings across various hierarchical scales.

Boyan uniquely combines deep geological domain expertise with hands-on software, database, and web product development experience, bridging the gap between traditional sedimentology and building digital-based solutions. Boyan previously held research and teaching positions at the University of Adelaide. He holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Dallas and a BSc from the University of Toronto.

PESA QLD July Core Workshop

Taroom Trough / Bowen Basin

Interpreting Three-Dimensional Fluvial and Shoreline Architecture from Core, Depositional Analogues, and Forward Stratigraphic Models

Presented by: Dr. Boyan Vakarelov (Founder, SEDBASE)

You are invited to join a practical workshop focused on interpreting depositional environments and predicting 3D architectures in shallow marine and fluvial intervals. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on examination of selected Permian and Mesozoic cores, this workshop will cover:

● Using hierarchical frameworks to address geological questions at the appropriate architectural scale.

● Identifying depositional environments in core, with a primary focus on active depositional processes.

● Examining typical 3D architectures in shallow marine and fluvial environments under different process regimes and their impact on subsurface fluid flow.

● Leveraging depositional analogues, 3D conceptual models, and realistic forward stratigraphic models to improve subsurface architectural predictions.

Learning Outcomes:● Gain practical experience using physical structures and ichnology to interpret local depositional environments within cores.

● Improve your understanding of the three-dimensional aspects of depositional systems through extensive analogue databases, 3D conceptual models, and forward stratigraphic models.

● Gain insight into how these tools can improve inter-well predictions while accounting for appropriate levels of depositional uncertainty.

Who Should Attend:
Exploration and development geologists, petrophysicists, reservoir engineers, academics, and geoscience students.

Analogue Database Access:
All participants will be granted complimentary access to the Sedbase web-based platform for the duration of the workshop.

Pricing for this event are now finalised.
