2026 PESA WEBINAR SERIES: PESA and the Natural Hydrogen Association of Australia: Natural Hydrogen Series – Installment 1

Tuesday, 4 August @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm (Australia/Perth time)
Free – $10.00

Guest Speaker(s): Jinxiang Huang (Bifrost Resources)

Dr Jinxiang Huang is a geoscientist with more than 15 years of experience spanning academic research, mineral exploration and emerging natural hydrogen exploration. She is currently Director and Principal Geologist at Bifrost Resources, a Perth-based junior exploration company focused on identifying and advancing natural hydrogen opportunities in Australia.

Jinxiang spent more than a decade at Macquarie University working with the internationally recognised GEMOC ARC National Key Centre and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Core to Crust Fluid Systems. Her research focused on the composition, evolution and architecture of the continental lithosphere, integrating mantle petrology, geochemistry, especially isotopic geochemistry and geophysics.

Following her academic career, Jinxiang transitioned into industry, gaining hands-on exploration experience before joining LithoAtlas Geoscience, where she works on integrating multidisciplinary geological, geochemical and geophysical datasets to understand lithospheric architecture and support regional-scale exploration targeting.

In recent years, Jinxiang has developed a particular focus on natural hydrogen (and helium) exploration, including hydrogen generation mechanisms, geological hydrogen systems, exploration methodologies, project screening and global industry developments. Her work bridges fundamental geoscience with practical exploration concepts.

PESA and the Natural Hydrogen Association of Australia Joint Webinar Series: Natural Hydrogen – Installment 1

Presented by Jinxiang Huang (Bifrost Resources)

Abstract:

PESA and the Natural Hydrogen Association of Australia present this first installment of the Natural Hydrogen webinar series.  In this installment, Jinxiang Huang from Bifrost Resources will present a general overveiw of natural hydrogen and will provide a summary of the state of the industry:

Natural hydrogen, also referred to as geological or white hydrogen, has rapidly emerged as a new exploration target with the potential to contribute to achieving net-zero emissions. Generated naturally by geological processes within the Earth, hydrogen may migrate through the subsurface and accumulate in geological reservoirs. Growing exploration activity, new drilling programs and evolving regulatory frameworks have attracted increasing interest from the energy, resources and investment communities.

This webinar will provide a general introduction to natural hydrogen and an overview of the current state of this emerging industry. It will examine where natural hydrogen occurs, the principal geological processes responsible for its generation, and the geological controls on its migration, accumulation and preservation. Current exploration approaches will also be reviewed, including screening of historical datasets, surface and soil-gas geochemistry, geophysical methods and exploration drilling.

The webinar will also examine recent global exploration activity, emerging geological play concepts, resource potential, economic considerations and the key uncertainties facing the sector. Particular emphasis will be placed on distinguishing encouraging hydrogen occurrences and drilling results from demonstrated, commercially producible resources.
