Abstract:
In the southeastern part of the Papuan peninsula structures which have been formed by compressional tectonics are located on the south side of the island whilst structures formed by extensional tectonics are found in the centre and north of the peninsula.
Compressional structures are known from offshore seismic reflection surveys. The extensional structures are known from regional geological mapping. This paper investigates how is it possible to have the two contrasting tectonic regimes so closely associated. The results of recent studies of deep crust and mantle structure provide insights to the answer.
