Abstract:
Early explorers in the Gippsland Basin must have been ecstatic to find the large accumulations of oil and gas in the Top Latrobe reservoirs. These were easily identifiable on logs. What they did not initially appreciate, was that many of the large gas reservoirs and smaller oil accumulations were underlain by a large wedge of freshwater aquifer that extends from the onshore portion of the basin to some considerable distance offshore. It is difficult to differentiate hydrocarbon zones from fresh water-bearing intervals that are both shaly and present within this wedge.
