Abstract:
Overpressure forms a significant hazard for exploration in eastern Australasian basins, including Papua New Guinea and New Zealand'sEast Coast Basin. Overpressures of 90 - 100% of vertical stress have been encountered at uplifted, eroded regions of the basin. Without the effect of lateral shortening, modelled fluid pressure decreases during uplift to hydrostatic or sub-hydrostatic levels. The development of overpressure due to lateral deformation may be an important element of petroleum systems in Eastern Australasian Basins that have experienced or are currently undergoing lateral deformation.
