Abstract:
Conventional wisdom holds that all oils recovered to date in the Gippsland Basin are derived from the thermal maturation of terrestrial organic matter deposited in lower coastal plain strata. However, condensate recovered from Anemone lilA in the southeastern part of the basin has biomarkers that suggest a significant contribution to the oils from marine organic matter. This evidence includes low pristane/phytane ratios (ca. 2.5), abundant C27 diasterane, and presence of complex methylsteranes including dinosteranes. The interpreted source rock horizons for the marine-sourced condensate lie in the shales of the Golden Beach Subgroup.
