Abstract:

Residual oil zones (ROZs) are zones of oil at residual saturation below identified oil–water contacts that are typically immovable and not included in normal reserve calculations. Where reservoir conditions are suitable for miscible displacement, ROZs can provide an excellent target for the application of CO2-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR). They offer both a producible oil resource accessible through CO2-EOR, as well as a large pore volume for permanent CO2 storage. To understand and quantify the potential of both greenfield and brownfield residual oil zones for CO2-EOR, Geoscience Australia initiated a series of studies as part of the Exploring for the Future (EFTF) initiative. A key outcome of this study is a workflow to identify and qualify potential ROZs using petroleum system tools.
