Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG) has been awarded the contract to build a new $170 million Northern Territory gas pipeline for Newmont Mining Corporation.
The contract is for AGIG to build, own and operate the new 440-kilometre pipeline which will transport natural gas to Newmont’s Tanami mine sites, about 540km north-west of Alice Springs, in the Northern Territory.
The pipeline – to be called the Tanami Gas Pipeline – will connect to the existing Amadeus Gas Pipeline, about 180km north-west of Alice Springs, and link up with supply of gas to Newmont’s Tanami facilities.
According to AGIG up to 400 jobs will be created during the construction period
AGIG’s Chief Customer Officer, Mr Andrew Staniford, said that construction of the pipeline was already underway and was on target to be completed in the first quarter of calendar 2019.
“This is one of the most significant projects and investments we have undertaken in Australia and is an extremely exciting and complex project given its isolated location and geographical terrain,” Mr Staniford said.
“Importantly, it will deliver much-needed natural gas to Newmont’s Tanami Operation,” he said.
Mr Staniford said the pipeline will follow the alignment of Tanami Road and pass through a mix of pastoral land, Aboriginal freehold land and Crown land.
“We have ensured that all landholders and local communities are well informed in the lead-up to and throughout the duration of the pipeline construction process,” he said.
“AGIG has liaised closely in consultations with the related communities to help define the final route with particular consideration given to the existing infrastructure, utilities, pastoral, mining, environmental, Aboriginal heritage and sacred sites impacts.
“Importantly our work has included investigation to determine how this project may have any impact on cultural heritage, and we have also undertaken research on flora and fauna, watercourse crossings, erosion, dust and waste management,” he said.
Mr Staniford said that AGIG – as a long-term operator of Australian gas transmission pipelines – had vast experience in managing the environmental factors as part of its commitment to sustainability of the environment.
