Abstract:

Downward continuation of exploration gravity or magnetic data is a basic part of many data processing and interpretation techniques. Methods based on Taylor approximations are quick, easy, and visual ways to obtain good results. But for prediction, Taylor approximations are not the best, Padé approximations often give better approximations than Taylor, and they may still work where Taylor do not converge, which would be helpful when the depth of downward continuation is deep. We compared twelve downward continuation methods based on Taylor and Padé approximations.
