Abstract:
Synthesis of available palaeomagnetic data shows that between 1050 Ma and 725 Ma the palaeomagnetie poles for Laurentia and East Gondwanaland overlap when the continents are reconstructed as the Rodinia supereontinent (Fig. 1). By 580 Ma Laurentia and East Gondwanaland were separated by 50° in latitude and an unknown amount in longitude, implying that the Palaeo-Paeifie Ocean was several thousands of kilometres wide (Fig. 2). Breakup of Rodinia to form the Palaeo-Paeific arguably commenced around 700 Ma.
