Abstract:
Sandbox models were constructed to investigate the development of faults in an extensional regime. The models generally displayed a crossing-fault geometry with a graben overlying a horst, and are similar to seismically-defined "hourglass" structures from the Jabiru Terrace. The symmetry of the modelled structures is a predominant feature. The effects of an unconformity and two stages of extension are also simulated, and demonstrate that some early major faults are not rejuvenated, and some significant late-stage faults do not directly relate to older faults. The models are used as guides to interpretation of seismic sections in poor data zones and suggest that localised Tertiary grabens are good indicators of deeper horsts. These horsts are attractive targets for petroleum exploration.
