Abstract:

This paper outlines the blow out of Della-1 gas well and the subsequent investigation into the causes of the failure. As part of this work, selection criteria were developed in order to evaluate other wells possibly at risk. Studies carried out on other wells showed that the mode of attack on the casings was very similar in all cases. It is concluded that the corrosion observed is due to a combination of reasons but mainly results from corrosive groundwaters and sulphate reducing bacteria. Remedial work is based on addressing methods to minimise the effect of both of these affects and to prevent current and future wells from failing in a similar manner.
