Abstract:

The Eromanga Basin, possibly owing its initial formation to deep crustal metamorphism due to crustal heating, was subject to abnormally large subsidence from the Aptian to the Cenomanian, during which time a thick sequence of marine to non-marine sediments was deposited. It is suggested that the abnormal subsidence was initiated by minor regional tectonic compression (generated by rifting processes on the southern and eastern margins and active volcanoes along the north-east margin during this period), and further caused by the phase transition from granulite to eclogite rocks. This model, consistent with the available geophysical data, offers an alternative explanation for the subsidence history of the Eromanga Basin.
