Abstract:

Only 10 wildcat wells and 7 stratigraphic wells have been drilled in the South Canning Basin where encouraging oil and gas shows occur throughout the Paleozoic sequence. Palaeogeographic reconstructions are made from this well data for the mid to upper Ordovician, early Silurian, mid Devonian and Sakmarian. In addition, depositional models are derived for Lower Palaeozoic sedimentation in this basin. These models illustrate possible spatial arrangement of major reservoirs, source rocks and seals in the South Canning Basin which is currently one of the last great regions of frontier exploration in Australia.
