Abstract:
Three seismic-stratigraphic sequences were mapped within the uppermost Latrobe Group at the westernend of the offshore Gippsland Basin. The three sequences are interpreted to be Upper Eocene coastal barrier complexes deposited under conditions of low sediment influx and a relative rise of sea level. The barrier omplexes are located in the Perch-Dolphin area and probably trend onshore in the vicinity of Golden Beach and Seaspray. The relative rise in sea level combined with the low sediment influx resulted in an overall transgression of the shoreline of about 25 to 30 km to the west and northwest during the Late Eocene. lternative
models for the construction and migration of barriers are examined and a possible correlation of global sea-level curves with the Gippsland sequences is presented.
