Abstract:
Alan Partridge and I have been pondering shibboleths lately. (For the uninitiated, this is nothing like a laccolith.)
The reason was Alan's effort to clarify the use (and misuse) of the terms 'Top of Latrobe' and 'Latrobe Unconformity' in the Gippsland Basin. Alan is currently writing up a revised stratigraphy of the Gippsland Basin. The next few paragraphs are extracted from notes Alan sent me, and I hope my rendering, though very simplified, sets the issue clearly.
