Presentation Abstract:
CCUS – Both Essential Abatement Technology and a Conundrum
Many if not all credible, deep decarbonisation scenarios include a significant role for CCUS both for energy and for other hard to abate sectors such as steel, cement and chemicals. Further, risks of “overshoot” (ref. IPCC, AR6) are increasing, leading to an increasing recognition that in future Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technology will be needed. This puts further pressure on developing large scale CCS hub projects in general and developing suitable “sinks” in particular. But are we sure we know what ‘suitable’ is? What key information is still needed to progress investment? And, globally, are they likely to be where they are needed?
