Abstract:
In the context of declining oil supply, the Australian Government provided Geoscience Australia with funding for the 2006–2011 Energy Security Programme. The purpose of this programme is to supply pre-competitive data and information to stimulate exploration in under-explored onshore regions of Australia including assessments of uranium, thorium, geothermal and hydrocarbon resources. The onshore petroleum project focuses on those sedimentary basins perceived to be prospective for oil and gas, as indicated by previously recorded hydrocarbon shows (Fig. 1). Taking an innovative approach, project work includes the utilisation of new regional potential fi eld data and the acquisition of several deep seismic surveys in order to image basement features that controlled or influenced basin architecture and tectonic evolution. Project results will include an improved understanding of thermal histories and source rock maturity levels and, most importantly, hydrocarbon preservation stages and mobility in each basin.
