Abstract:
The Jurassic sequence in the easternmost part of Surat Basin is underlain by sedimentary rocks of the Horrane Trough. This feature has previously been interpreted as an analogue of the Late Triassic Tarong Basin. An alternative interpretation of the Horrane Trough as a structurally preserved remnant of Bowen Basin sedimentary rocks is presented in this paper. The interpreted Permian-Triassic section is overlain by sedimentary rocks which record discontinuous Late Triassic deposition predating deposition of the Early Jurassic Precipice Sandstone. The relationship of the easternmost Surat Basin to the Clarence-Moreton Basin is also examined. The Kumbarilla Ridge has been traditionally regarded as the boundary between these basins, but the Toowoomba Strait is shown to be a more appropriate eastern limit to the Surat Basin.
