Abstract:
As an industry we have a poor track record of estimating prospect volume distributions and we tend to overpredict the pre-drill volumes, with most discoveries resulting in the pre-drill P90 volumes or less (Figure 1). To achieve improved prediction this paper offers an alternative/complementary approach to the traditional 1D probabilistic volumetric assessment. The proposed workflow uses a series of 3D static models populated with information from seismic and well data to test volumetric sensitivities to different geological parameters. This offers a powerful tool to communicate geological complexity and sense check volumetric ranges and uncertainty.
