Abstract:
In research directed at understanding the potential of coal to sequester anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2), the CSIRO’s Energy Transformed Flagship and the CO2CRC have been investigating the geological factors controlling the distribution of naturally occurring gas in the Sydney Basin. The primary objectives of this study are to determine the geological controls on gas origin, migration and accumulation in the Hunter Coalfield, and analyse the spatial variation of naturally occurring CO2 in coal seams in order to predict the long-term fate of injected anthropogenic gas into deep coal seam.
