Abstract:
Exploration for petroleum depends on construction of models that describe the time-temperature framework of how a prospective basin has evolved. A critical element in the construction of such models is the correlation of sedimentary units between widely spaced boreholes. Glauconitic clay minerals have long been recognised as having the potential to provide absolute depositional ages useful in establishing the chronostratigraphy of sedimentary basins (Odin et al. 1982). Glauconite dating, however, is subject to a number of difficulties, particularly in sample preparation and in the interpretation of the analytical results leading to erroneous or ambiguous outcomes.
