Abstract:
Origin Energy Resources (NZ) Ltd (Origin) was awarded exploration permit PEP 38262 in 2005 and PEP 38264 in 2006, together covering an area of 36,420 km2 in the offshore Canterbury Basin, New Zealand. Previous exploration of the offshore Canterbury Basin had been largely restricted to water depths less than 200 m. The discovery of sub-commercial gas/condensate pools in two of the five wells drilled proves the existence of a working petroleum system. New seismic data acquired by Origin have revealed that significant potential exists in the deepwater regions of the basin. Regional seismic interpretation and mapping have been integrated with 2D petroleum systems modelling to predict the distribution and maturity of source kitchens, the timing of hydrocarbon generation and to estimate the volumes of hydrocarbons expelled from Cretaceous source rocks in the offshore basin.
