SUMMARY:PESA WA November 21st Evening Talk: Top seal and compartmentalisation in the Kingia Play\, implications for porosity preserving plays.
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a technical Evening Event Thursday 21st November.\nTop Seal and Compartmentalisation in the Kingia Play\, implications for porosity preserving Plays. \nPresented by Alex Fuerst (Molyneux Advisors) \nIn the Kingia play of the North Perth Basin\, significant compartmentalisation is observed across the basin and within individual fields\, despite the sand-on-sand juxtaposition. This compartmentalisation manifests in both pressure and phase (gas/water) variations. Cemented fractures are observed near fault zones in Perth Basin wells. This results in decreased permeability near faults\, as evidenced by local wells in the Perth Basin. \nSEM images show fractures within grains of grain coated sands are sufficient to serve as nucleation sites for quartz cementation. In contrast\, within the Irwin River Coal Measures (IRCM)\, the grain surfaces alone provide sufficient sites for cementation. The IRCM sands exhibit permeabilities that are characteristic of seals\, with samples displaying quartz cementation\, kaolin cementation\, or a combination of both. \nThe implications for play risk / play maps are significant. Shallower Kingia penetrations face an unproven top seal due to the less cemented IRCM\, potentially explaining the multiple shallower exploration failures. At greater depths\, the presence of more complex faulting may enhance fault seal integrity and lead to more intricate trap configurations. However\, this also likely increases development complexity due to reservoir compartmentalization. The observed improvement in IRCM sealing capacity with depth suggests broader implications for exploring deeper grain-coated plays\, allowing for a wider range of facies to be considered as potential seals. \n  \nTimings for the event: \nDate: Thursday 21st November\, 2024 \nVenue: The Shoe Bar\, Yaga Square\, Perth \nTime: 6pm – 8pm (Perth time) \n  \n\nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (PESA Members must Log on to the PESA website to purchase) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:              Free (registration is essential)

SUMMARY:PESA WA May 13th Evening Talk: Evaluating controls on deposition using Ichnology within the Eocene-aged mixed influence deltaic strata of the Mangahewa Formation
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a technical Evening Event Monday 13th May.\nEvaluating controls on deposition using Ichnology within the Eocene-aged mixed influence deltaic strata of the Mangahewa Formation (Taranaki Basin\, NZ): Lessons learned for application towards studies on mixed deltaic successions in the Bonaparte and Perth Basin. \nPresented by Fiona Burns (TASK Fronterra) \nThe Middle to Upper Eocene Mangahewa Formation forms a broadly NE-SW-oriented coastal facies belt which constitutes the main hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Taranaki Basin\, New Zealand. The Mangahewa Formation represents deposition within a deltaic setting that displays variable influences of wave\, fluvial and tidal processes\, with wave and fluvial processes dominant. Broadly\, the >1000 m thick formation constitutes a 2nd order progradational succession overlain by a retrogradational succession composed of 3rd and 4th order sequence sets. Arcuate delta and beach-ridge geometries can be imaged using seismic attribute data. Landwards of the shoreline systems\, lower delta plain with associated fluvial channel facies belts dominate. \nIn the Pohokura Field and Turangi area\, well developed\, wave-dominated\, fluvial influenced\, tide-affected (Wft) shoreface packages dominate the reservoir sections. The shoreface strata comprise cross-stratified sandstone-rich deposits with relatively high degrees of bioturbation and high ichnodiversity\, dominated by Ophiomorpha nodosa\, Ophiomorpha irregulaire\, Dactyloidites isp.\, Conichnus isp.\, and very large Asterosoma isp. Trace-fossil analysis enabled the subdivision of the shoreface strata into Upper\, Middle\, and Lower Shoreface (proximal and distal) packages. High stress levels are characteristic of the Distributary Channel packages\, which are either non-bioturbated or reveal sparse bioturbation by Skolithos linearis. Abundances of Ophiomorpha nodosa preferentially reworking clay drapes characterize the uppermost parts of tidally influenced channel packages locally. Firmground Thalassinoides isp. (Glossifungites ichnofacies) are common below channel bases. \nIchnologically\, the back barrier lagoonal heterolithic strata\, mainly interbedded with coal beds\, reveal highly stressed ichnofaunas. They were either non-bioturbated\, or contained Planolites montanus\, rare Chondrites isp. and/or Thalassinoides isp. Heterolithic strata representing down-drift strata also reveal similarly stressed ichnofaunas\, with many monospecific trace-fossil assemblages characteristic. In contrast\, non-stressed Delta Front heterolithic deposits are characterised by intensely bioturbated strata with maximum ichnodiversity. Trace-fossil assemblages include Thalassinoides isp.\, Teichichnus rectus\, Phycosiphon incertum\, Palaeophycus tubularis\, Chondrites isp.\, Terebellina isp. and Schuabcylindrichnus isp. \nDetailed ichnological models developed for mixed deltaic systems within Eocene-aged  successions where there is extensive core coverage\, provide invaluable tools when developing models for much older mixed deltaic successions such as the Permian of the Perth Basin and the Middle Jurassic of the Bonaparte Basin. \n  \nTimings for the event: \nDate: Monday 13th May\, 2024 \nVenue: The Shoe Bar\, Yaga Square\, Perth \nTime: 6pm – 8pm (Perth time) \n  \n\nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (PESA Members must Log on to the PESA website to purchase) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:              Free (registration is essential)

SUMMARY:PESA WA November Evening talk: Natural Hydrogen Exploration - applying familiar tools in new ways
DESCRIPTION:Natural Hydrogen Exploration: Applying Familiar Tools in New Ways \n\nKrista Davies: Edith Cowan University\, School of Engineering\, Centre for Sustainable Energy Resources \n\n\nThe field of natural hydrogen exploration is currently experiencing a surge in global interest\, with a notable focus on Australia\, where recent legislative changes have created opportunities for exploration initiatives. But how can we effectively pursue this non-petroleum gas resource? \nIn recent years\, the international dialogue has revolved around the concepts of play fairway mapping and soil gas sampling. However\, the path to harnessing natural hydrogen is not as straightforward as merely marking serpentinites on a map\, assembling drilling equipment\, and venturing into the field. It’s important to acknowledge that natural hydrogen exploration presents distinct challenges that differ from conventional petroleum exploration\, necessitating tailored methodological adjustments. \nThe complex chemical interactions between hydrogen\, water\, and minerals within rocks are contingent upon various factors\, including the original mineral composition\, temperature\, pressure\, salinity and the redox conditions of the system. \nDuring this presentation\, we will delve into a selection of emerging techniques spanning fieldwork\, laboratory analysis\, and desktop methodologies that are currently being developed within the natural hydrogen industry. Many of these techniques share common ground with established practices in oil and gas exploration\, enabling a seamless and practical adaptation to the unique demands of natural hydrogen. \nIn light of the escalating importance of sustainable energy sources\, the exploration of natural hydrogen via the refinement of petroleum techniques assumes a pivotal role in safeguarding our future energy security. Our research underscores the significance of an efficient and pragmatic approach to unlocking the potential of natural hydrogen. With ongoing research and development\, natural hydrogen has the potential to evolve into a critical and dependable contributor to the clean energy mix. \n\nTuesday 14th November 6pm (for talk starting at 6.45pm)\, The Shoe Bar (Yagan Square) \nCost: \nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (Members must Log on to the PESA website to see the member prices) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:               Free (registration is essential) \nBookings close Monday 13th November at 5pm for venue and catering purposes.

SUMMARY:PESA WA September Evening talk: Casting a Bigger Shadow: Big New Opportunities in Australian Basins revealed by Regional Fluid Inclusion Data
DESCRIPTION:Casting a Bigger Shadow: Big new opportunities in Australian Basins revealed by regional fluid inclusion data\n \nEnhanced hydrocarbon exploration\, Reduced development risk\, Improved geological storage of CO2 \n\nMark Lisk (Ascendience Geoscience) \n\n\nAustralia boasts the largest resource of fluid inclusion data in the world\, with more than 800 wells\,\nleading the way in application by the oil and gas industry. For exploration\, where constraining the\ntiming\, origin and phases of fluid migration is crucial\, the contribution to improved understanding of\nprocesses that produce\, alter\, or destroy hydrocarbon systems has been profound. These data\nrevolutionise the mitigation of risk in modern petroleum systems analysis\, improve understanding of\nproven systems for better appraisal and development planning and reveal pathfinders to new\npetroleum systems that will yield future discoveries. \nIn field development these data are especially valuable\, predicting down-dip oil rims in gas fields\,\noffering constraint on reservoir quality\, and by constraining water saturation in fields where formation\nwater samples are contaminated these unique data augment conventional measurements and yield\nsuperior control on the accuracy of field reserve calculations. \nAs geological storage of CO2 emerges as a vital climate mitigation strategy fluid inclusion data provides\ncrucial insights for effective screening of storage sites. From demonstrating the absence of viable\npetroleum systems to avoid contamination of yet to find petroleum resources to constraining the\nthermal conditions in wells with poor or no data and providing crucial constraint on the nature of\naquifer systems especially for migration assisted storage sites where salinity looms as a critical\, but\npoorly constrained\, factor. \nThis whistle stop tour examines a diverse range of Australian Basins and beyond to demonstrate the\nutility of these methods\, highlight areas where application directly contributed to discoveries or an\nimproved understanding of existing oil and gas fields and reveal those areas with good potential for\nfuture discoveries. Early application to identifying suitable sites for the geological storage of CO2 will\nalso be discussed where fluid inclusions can literally help to save the world! \n\nEvent Sponsors: \n \nThursday 21st September 6pm (for talk starting at 6.45pm)\, The Shoe Bar (Yagan Square) \nCost: \nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (Members must Log on to the PESA website to see the member prices) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:               Free (registration is essential) \nBookings close Wednesday 20th September at 12 noon for venue and catering purposes.
