SUMMARY:PESA WA February 13th Evening Talk: New Tricks for Old Dogs: Modelling for the Energy Transition
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a technical Evening Event Thursday 13th February.\nNew Tricks for Old Dogs: Modelling for the Energy Transition\nPresented by Mark Bentley (Langdale Geoscience) \nSo\, the plan is to store CO2 … \nIf we’re involved in making reservoir and simulation models for oil and gas production\, what do we have to do differently now for the world of storage?  On the face of it\, these are just gas disposal schemes (simple).  On closer inspection\, it’s not quite like that\, and it turns out it’s much more interesting (harder). \nThis short talk looks at some areas of change and the aspects we need to get right if our forecasts are to be meaningful at all.  There’s a clear shift from sedimentary to more structural themes (which we have to be much better at)\, a replacement of familiar concepts such as in-place resource volumes and recovery factor to less familiar ideas of storativity and storage efficiency and a rethink of the importance of heterogeneity in the face of different fluids and in a non-isothermal world. \nThe scales we model at will need to be different\, and so will the timescales.  There’s also the over-arching issue that best solutions are likely to lie in aquifers\, yet most projects on the drawing board are for depleted gas fields. Some technical reservoir issues are clearly less important than they were during production\, but others are more critical in areas where our supporting data is limited. \nNot really prosecco – more like olive oil. \n  \nTimings for the event: \nDate: Thursday 13st February 2025 \nVenue: Parmelia Hilton Hotel\, Perth \nTime: 6pm – 8pm (Perth time) \n  \n\nPESA Members:                                $40.00 (PESA Members must Log on to the PESA website to purchase) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:              Free (registration is essential)

SUMMARY:February 2025 Workshop - Good Model: Bad Models – How Can We Tell?
DESCRIPTION: Good Model: Bad Models – How Can We Tell? \nA one-day workshop with Mark Bentley\, 13th February 2025 \nReservoir and simulation models are widely used to generate forecasts and support decision-making in operating companies\, yet the results often disappoint.  Where do models ‘go bad’\, and what can we do to address the disappointments? \n\nFirstly: sometimes we do OK.  There are excellent examples of useful models which help support good development decisions and help move us forward. \nHowever\, there is also a broad tendency towards over-optimism in modelling\, a habit of making forecast ranges which are too narrow and key heterogeneity is often lost in the modelling process\, leading to misleading predictions. \nIn this one-day workshop\, common causes are shared\, along with suggested solutions and\, for those who use or review models\, things to query. \n\nWorkshop will take place at the Parmelia Hilton Hotel\, Perth on the 13th February 2025: \nMembers: $400 \nNon-Members: $500 \nStudent Members: $100

SUMMARY:PESA WA Christmas Luncheon 2024:
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to our Christmas Technical Luncheon on Thursday 12th December\nTalk by Ernie Delfos – ‘Colour of Rocks’  \n\n\nHaving spent over 40 years in the great Oil & Gas industry\, you know what part of your career you are in when you are invited to give a talk on it. It seemed an appropriate invitation to accept when in July this year I realised that my passion for geology came a full circle with a trip to the Bungle Bungle Range in the Kimberley region. The magnificent beehive structures and their alternating red and yellow colouring caused the posing of the question why? The same question as a teenager I asked what causes the colour of rocks and who studies this? \n\n\nTransitioning from full time employment to “my time” employment is exciting and highly recommended if affordable and I am excited to share experiences\, lessons learned\, and yarns on all these influences and mentors that shaped my career so far. \nI strongly believe there is plenty of running room in the future demand of hydrocarbons to improve global standards of living\, while we find better ways to cut emissions and seek alternatives. \n\n  \nPESA WA Annual General Meeting\nPESA WA is seeking new committee members to support the running of the society and its active program of technical and social events throughout the year.  A range of positions are available\, with opportunities to shadow existing members to build experience and understanding of the committee. \nNominations for 2025 committee positions are required by the 6th of December\, prior to the AGM at the Annual Christmas Luncheon on the 12th of December. SUMMARY:PESA WA March 21st Evening Talk: Perth Basin Technical Evening Event
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to a Perth Basin technical Evening Event Tuesday 21st March.\nL7 / EP 437 – Pushing the (Allanooka) Boundary – how far North is far enough?\nPresented by Mike Collins (NED Triangle Energy) \nThe onshore Perth basin (south of the Allanooka Fault) has been the focus of some significant successful exploration drilling and appraisal since the serendipitous discovery of Waitsia in 2014. Since then\, a whole tranche of further discoveries at Beharra Springs Deep\, West Erregulla\, Lockyer Deep\, South Erregulla\, North Erregulla Deep\, Trigg NW and Tarantula Deep have proven the extent of the Permian Kingia Fm play. \nFollowing Triangle’s acquisition of the Bookara 3D seismic over the L7 and EP 437 permits in 2022 and with the application of the latest interpretative software in relation to reservoir and structural analysis\, Triangle Energy is about to embark on an exciting drilling campaign (north of the Allanooka Fault). \nIt has been over 30 years since any wells have been drilled in the L7 acreage area. Triangle’s upcoming exploration drilling campaign aims to extend the prospective northern boundary of the Permian Kingia Fm gas play whilst at the same time “rediscovering” areas of known oil propspectivity. \nThis talk will take you on the journey to date………….. \nDiversification is the only free lunch.\nPresented by Stuart Nicholls (Strike Energy) \nThis is the notion that holding a broader range of assets can result in better returns without assuming more risk. Whilst completely exposed to the WA gas and energy markets and constrained to the Perth Basin\, Strike’s acreage is actually heavily diversified across two completely independent play types in the Permian (north) and the Jurassic (south) which have unique characteristics\, challenges\, and benefits. Stuart will go through these plays and how Strike is approaching project development and capital allocation using its geological diversity to drive shareholder returns. \n  \nTimings for the event: \nDate: Thursday 21st March\, 2024 \nVenue: Parmelia Hilton\, Mill St\, Perth \nTime: 6pm – 8pm (Perth time) \n  \n\nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (PESA Members must Log on to the PESA website to purchase) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:              Free (registration is essential)

SUMMARY:PESA WA February Technical Lunch: Possible compartmentalisation of the Kidson Sub-basin from new geophysical data\, and regional projects in WA
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB: \n  \n \nGold Sponsors Katalyst Data Management\, IKON Science and DUG: \n                   \n  \nand Silver Sponsors Applied Geoscience\, Delft and Qeye: \n                     \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 15th February.\nPossible compartmentalisation of the Kidson Sub-basin from new geophysical data\, and regional projects in WA. \nPresented by Alex Zhan (DMIRS: Geological Survey and Resource Strategy Division) \n\nThe Kidson Sub-basin of the southern Canning Basin has long been considered as a relatively simple sag deepening into its depositional axis\, presumably in the central part of the sub-basin. This structural model is based on limited seismic coverage and well intersections near the flanks of the sub-basin\, and is here tentatively revised following integrated mapping with new regional data.  The data integration reveals a possible east-northeast oriented basement ridge with a structural amplitude up to 1000 m in the central part of the Kidson Sub-basin. This ridge possibly divides the Kidson Sub-basin into two distinct parts and potentially is a significant feature with extensive implications for hydrocarbon\, CO2 sequestration\, natural hydrogen\, helium and mineral prospectivities of the sub-basin. Although the basement ridge is supported by regional changes in depositional facies and marginal seismic data\, the existence of such elevated feature remains highly uncertain in the absence of a seismic profile across the ridge. Further work is required to confirm its presence and de-risk exploration efforts. \nEvent Sponsors: \n  \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). SUMMARY:PESA WA February 13th Evening Talk: The pathway to Gigatonne CO2 storage
DESCRIPTION:PESA WA invites you to an Evening technical talk on Tuesday 13th February.\nThe pathway to Gigatonne CO2 storage\nPresented by Phil Ringrose (Equinor & NTNU / 2023-24 SEG Distinguished Instructor Short Course Leader – Storage of Carbon Dioxide in Saline Aquifers) \nThe large-scale capture and storage of carbon dioxide is a critical component of the route to achieving Net Zero. However\, CCUS technologies are still in their infancy. The IEA calculated worldwide storage-rates in 2021 of approximately 40 Mt of CO2 per year but this needs to be upscaled to 7.6Gt of CO2 per year by 2050. Phil will review the pathway to gigatonne-scale CO2 storage and present details from a case study on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. \n  \nTimings for the event: \nDate: Tuesday 13th February\, 2024 \nVenue: Parmelia Hilton\, Mill St\, Perth \nTime: 6pm – 8pm (Perth time) \n  \n\nPESA Members:                                $25.00 (PESA Members must Log on to the PESA website to purchase) \nSPE Members:                                  $25.00 (SPE Members only please) \nNon-members:                                 $50.00 \nPESA Students Members:              Free (registration is essential)

SUMMARY:PESA WA October Technical Lunch: Why understanding hydrodynamics is critical in petroleum exploration\, appraisal\, development and production.
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB \n  \n \nGold Sponsors Katalyst Data Management\, Applied Geoscience\, Delft Inversion\, DUG and IKON Science \n              \n                                                \n \nand Silver Sponsor Qeye \n              \n  \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 17th October\nWhy understanding hydrodynamics is critical in petroleum exploration\, appraisal\, development and production. \nPresented by Robert Seggie & Peter van Ruth \n\nWater flow occurs in ALL sedimentary basins from higher pressured to lower pressure areas.  Flow occurs via permeable beds away from meteoric intake areas or from over-pressured mudstones that are de-watering.  Another source of pressure variation is aquifer depletion due to hydrocarbon production\, or aquifer pressurisation due to fluid injection. To understand fluid flow\, pressure must be expressed as over-pressure variation\, the variation in potential\, equating to over-pressure above hydrostatic gradient or head (the height a water column would rise above MSL in a pipe intersecting the point of measurement).  Variation in fluid potential within the aquifer beneath a hydrocarbon field results in a variation in FWL over a field (tilted or stepped contacts).  This is not evident in most fields due to the small size of fields relative to the small variations in potential which are routinely interpreted as measurement error.  However\, when the variation is higher\nthese tilts or steps can be very significant\, due to: \n\nLarge field areas\nFaults causing baffling\nLower permeabilities\nHigher water flows\nHigh density hydrocarbons where minor variation in potential causes\nsignificant tilting.\n\nIn this talk concepts such as overpressure\, potentiometric maps and sections and compartmentalised reservoirs are discussed.  Examples from all over the world are presented along with the impact on failed exploration wells and sub-optimum development plans.  Vertical variation in potential within fields is also discussed. SUMMARY:PESA WA August Technical Lunch: Flexible Solutions for both CCS Measurement\, Monitoring\, and Verification (MMV) and Offshore Windfarm Developments
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB \n  \n \nGold Sponsors Katalyst Data Management\, Applied Geoscience\, Delft Inversion\, DUG and IKON Science \n                \n                                                \n \nand Silver Sponsor Qeye \n \n  \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 17th August\nFlexible Solutions for both CCS Measurement\, Monitoring\, and Verification (MMV) and Offshore Windfarm Developments \nPresented by Andrew Long (PGS) \nMeasurement\, Monitoring\, and Verification (MMV) are essential to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects\, ensuring their effectiveness\, safety\, and regulatory compliance. Precise CO2 emission measurements\, ongoing project performance monitoring\, and independent data verification provide stakeholder confidence in the CCS system’s greenhouse gas reduction\, safe operation\, and prompt issue resolution. \nLikewise\, developing ground models for offshore wind turbine placement demands a comprehensive approach that addresses various geotechnical\, geophysical\, regulatory\, and stakeholder aspects. \nA common element should be that any ‘baseline’ geophysical platform is built to best practice standards for both CCS and Wind projects. For CCS\, accurate subsurface characterization ensures reliable site candidate selection and ranking\, facilitating the deployment of appropriate monitoring technologies post-CO2 injection in a cost-effective manner. Similarly\, high-resolution 3D geophysical data for Wind projects enable the development of an accurate 3D ground model for integrating subsequent geotechnical and geophysical measurements\, reducing the need for costly new surveys when adjusting turbine foundation locations. \nThis talk comprises four stages: \n\nI present AI\, machine learning\, and automation solutions to enhance the petrophysical and geological understanding of near-surface and overburden areas crucial for both CCS containment and Wind projects.\nI outline an efficient workflow for CCS site screening\, focusing on Container and Containment elements.\nI briefly discuss methods for acquiring high-resolution (HR) and ultra-high-resolution (UHR) seismic data cost-effectively\, including suggestions for congested infrastructure areas where traditional seismic surveys are logistically challenging.\nI describe subsurface characterization (both CCS and Wind) and monitoring solutions (for CCS) that leverage innovations from stages 1 and 3.\n\n\nEvent Sponsors: \n \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). SUMMARY:PESA WA June Technical lunch talk - Monitoring of the reservoir pressure & saturation changes using Extended Elastic Impedance from time lapse seismic data: Enfield Field
DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB \n  \n \nGold Sponsors Katalyst Data Management\, Applied Geoscience\, Delft Inversion and DUG \n                \n                                                \nand Silver Sponsor Qeye \n \n  \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 15th June\n\n“Monitoring reservoir pressure and saturation changes using extended elastic impedence from time lapse seismic data: Enfield Field\, NW Australia”\nPresented by Sergey Shevchenko\, SIS Exploration Pty Ltd\nThe Extended Elastic Impedance (EEI) concept has been used by the oil industry primarily for lithology and fluid prediction. We present a method of reservoir monitoring that calculates changes in pressure and saturation in a producing reservoir by applying EEI to time-lapse seismic data. The method uses time-lapse seismic difference data rotated to specific EEI χ angles which are optimised for the changes expected in a given reservoir. One angle is found to be appropriate to identify predicted changes in saturation\, using fluid substitution models\, while the other angle is found from rock-physics assumptions or laboratory measurements of fluid-pressure changes. \nOur technique is tested using time-lapse seismic data for the Enfield oil field\, in the North West Shelf\, Australia\, with estimates of optimal EEI rotation angles χ based on log data and Biot-Gassmann modelling for the fluid changes\, and on rock physics models fit to measurements made on core samples for the pressure changes. Reflectivity and inversion domains were used using various approaches to test results qualitatively and quantitively. \nThe final calculated pressure and saturation maps predicted areas where changes in pressure and/or saturation changes were expected. It was successfully tested with two areas of changing the pressure from the well data\, showing that our quantitative results are credible. Additionally\, our results coincide with the Enfield operator’s maps for pressure and saturation predictions. \n  \nTicket Prices: \nMember (Early Bird): $69.00 \nConcession Member [Retired\, Graduate or Hardship] (Early Bird): $59.00 \nStudent Member (Early Bird): $39.00 \nNon-Member: $99.00 \nMember (Non-Early Bird): $79.00 \nEarly bird pricing ends Thursday (1 week prior) at 5pm (AWST). All ticket sales close at 5pm Tuesday (2 days prior). \n  \nRefund Policy: Refunds are only applicable if notified in writing to WA-secretary@pesa.com.au prior to the close of ticket sales.
