Basin-floor fans; from outcrop to seismic – talk and workshop

SA/NT

Rob Kirk has put together a series of presentations examining the various different components of a stratigraphic sequence in outcrop and in the sub-surface. Each of these talks will be given as part of a mini-workshop. Rob will kick off each session with a presentation looking at outcrop and sub-surface examples, and then attendees can examine and interpret real-world examples from Rob’s collection. Attendees are also strongly encouraged to bring along their own seismic and / or well data for…

PESA SA/NT March Evening Talk: Deciphering the impact of the late Paleozoic ice age and basin tectonics on the prospectivity of Patchawarra Formation, Cooper Basin

SA/NT

The Late Carboniferous–Triassic Cooper Basin is Australia’s main onshore petroleum province spanning an area of 153,000 km2. The basin was located in the continental interior of eastern Gondwana at high latitudes (70°S) when the supercontinent Pangea was in its final stage of assembly. From the Late Carboniferous through to the middle Permian – a time known as the late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA) – ice sheets spanned most of southern Australia including the Cooper Basin. Many stratigraphic units in this basin…

Workshop 2 With Rob Kirk: Slopes – From Outcrop To Subsurface

SA/NT

Summary: This is the 2nd of Rob Kirk’s series of workshops examining the various components of a stratigraphic sequence in outcrop and in the sub-surface. This talk will venture up from the basin floor fans discussed in the first workshop to look at another difficult-to-explore region; the marine slope. This is the world of slumps, slides and variably back-filled submarine canyons. Levee-channel complexes will be discussed along with why we do not find them in Australia. Rob will kick off…

PESA SA/NT May Evening Talk: Mixing Up the Energy Mix – the Next 20 Years

SA/NT

Mixing Up the Energy Mix – the Next 20 Years Peter McCabe, Professor Emeritus, Australian School of Petroleum, University of Adelaide The energy mix is the percentage of energy consumed that comes from various energy sources including fossil fuels, nuclear and renewables.  On a global basis the energy mix has been relatively constant over the last 30+ years with fossil fuels comprising 84 to 87% of the total energy consumed on an annual basis. Concerns about climate change combined with…

Workshop 3 With Rob Kirk: Incised valleys and basal transgressive sands – from outcrop to subsurface.

SA/NT

Abstract: This talk is getting in to shallower water, following on from the previous deep water and slopes. We will look at fluvial incised valleys, cut in to the underlying sequence boundary and their often-associated basal transgressive marine sands. These units often contain reserves but can be relatively thin and, in developments, can have different poro-perms to the high stand deltas and fluvial. BTS are usually a well-only study (often not seen on seismic).   Post-workshop dinner: After the first…
