DESCRIPTION:Hosted with thanks to our Platinum sponsor SLB \n  \n \nGold Sponsors Katalyst Data Management\, Applied Geoscience\, Delft Inversion\, DUG and IKON Science \n              \n                                                \n \nand Silver Sponsor Qeye \n              \n  \nPESA WA invites you to our technical luncheon on Thursday 17th October\nWhy understanding hydrodynamics is critical in petroleum exploration\, appraisal\, development and production. \nPresented by Robert Seggie & Peter van Ruth \n\nWater flow occurs in ALL sedimentary basins from higher pressured to lower pressure areas.  Flow occurs via permeable beds away from meteoric intake areas or from over-pressured mudstones that are de-watering.  Another source of pressure variation is aquifer depletion due to hydrocarbon production\, or aquifer pressurisation due to fluid injection. To understand fluid flow\, pressure must be expressed as over-pressure variation\, the variation in potential\, equating to over-pressure above hydrostatic gradient or head (the height a water column would rise above MSL in a pipe intersecting the point of measurement).  Variation in fluid potential within the aquifer beneath a hydrocarbon field results in a variation in FWL over a field (tilted or stepped contacts).  This is not evident in most fields due to the small size of fields relative to the small variations in potential which are routinely interpreted as measurement error.  However\, when the variation is higher\nthese tilts or steps can be very significant\, due to: \n\nLarge field areas\nFaults causing baffling\nLower permeabilities\nHigher water flows\nHigh density hydrocarbons where minor variation in potential causes\nsignificant tilting.\n\nIn this talk concepts such as overpressure\, potentiometric maps and sections and compartmentalised reservoirs are discussed.  Examples from all over the world are presented along with the impact on failed exploration wells and sub-optimum development plans.  Vertical variation in potential within fields is also discussed. DESCRIPTION:Perth Basin Pitch – Cutting Edge Technologies Matched to Industry Need\nEvent details:\nThe Perth Basin Pitch\, held by PESA WA in conjunction with Ascendience Geoscience\, is a one-day interactive workshop to match cutting edge technologies with industry need. With a pipeline of major resource projects and considerable yet to find exploration potential this highly prospective region is attracting considerable attention. \nEffective solutions to sub-surface technical challenges facing successful field development and production\, as well as future exploration success\, will ensure cost-effective and timely project delivery\, but choosing the best technologies to deploy is critical to this goal. \nVendors from the service industry\, Academia and R&D organisations are invited to pitch technology solutions addressing a range of sub-surface issues that represent potential barriers to project success across themes of Geology\, Geophysics\, Petrophysics and Reservoir Engineering. Twenty short “pitch” style presentations will be delivered\, addressing a range of sub-surface uncertainties.  An interactive group discussion session will be used to rank the proposed solutions against perceived need and value creation potential using a consistent format. \nThe closing hour will comprise an overview session to provide decision makers within E&P companies an executive summary of the proposed technology solutions. \nAttendance by industry representatives from E&P companies is complimentary by registration.  \nTechnology vendors are invited to submit a summary outlining their solution-based approach using a provided template. Pitch presentations will be strictly limited to 10 minutes\, including time for questions. We present a method of reservoir monitoring that calculates changes in pressure and saturation in a producing reservoir by applying EEI to time-lapse seismic data. The method uses time-lapse seismic difference data rotated to specific EEI χ angles which are optimised for the changes expected in a given reservoir. One angle is found to be appropriate to identify predicted changes in saturation\, using fluid substitution models\, while the other angle is found from rock-physics assumptions or laboratory measurements of fluid-pressure changes. \nOur technique is tested using time-lapse seismic data for the Enfield oil field\, in the North West Shelf\, Australia\, with estimates of optimal EEI rotation angles χ based on log data and Biot-Gassmann modelling for the fluid changes\, and on rock physics models fit to measurements made on core samples for the pressure changes. Reflectivity and inversion domains were used using various approaches to test results qualitatively and quantitively. \nThe final calculated pressure and saturation maps predicted areas where changes in pressure and/or saturation changes were expected. It was successfully tested with two areas of changing the pressure from the well data\, showing that our quantitative results are credible.
