SUMMARY:PESA QLD: July Technical Evening - Constrained by Geology: Reducing Sub-Seismic Uncertainty with Depositional Analogues and Synthetic Data
DESCRIPTION:PESA QLD July Technical Evening\nConstrained by Geology: Reducing Sub-Seismic Uncertainty with Depositional Analogues and Synthetic Data\nPresented by: Dr. Boyan Vakarelov (Founder\, SEDBASE) \nAbstract:\nMany critical subsurface decisions depend on predicting fluid flow through stratigraphic architectures that occur below typical seismic resolution or in areas with sparse well control. This sub-seismic uncertainty can be meaningfully reduced through following a geology-first approach\, where depositional variability is constrained by process understanding and calibrated against natural analogues. Such an approach should embrace multiple geologically valid solutions and focus on the architectural scale most relevant to the decision at hand.\n\n\nThis presentation draws on insights from an extensive depositional analogue database compiled over the past two decades\, highlighting how process regime and system type control the architecture of shallow marine and fluvial successions. We will then demonstrate how forward stratigraphic and object-based modeling workflows can generate geologically realistic scenarios in data-limited settings. These models not only improve uncertainty quantification and ultimately flow prediction\, but also provide physics-informed synthetic datasets for training AI neural network models.\nEvent Details:\nDate: Thursday\, July 30th 2026 \nTime: 5 pm for a 6 pm start \nPlace: Transcontinental Hotel\, Brisbane \nStandard tickets close 5 pm Monday\, July 27th 2026. \nThose attending the July Core Workshop are welcomed to attend this technical evening with a reduced ticket price.

SUMMARY:PESA QLD: Structural Controls on Aquifer Connectivity in the Great Artesian Basin\, Narrabri
DESCRIPTION:PESA QLD June Luncheon\n\nGeological structures and aquifer connectivity in the Great Artesian Basin and underlying Permian-Triassic basins: insights from airborne electromagnetic surveys\, hydrochemistry and environmental tracers at Narrabri\, NSW\nPresented by: Dr Matthias Raiber\n(Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO)\n  \nAbstract: \nIn the Narrabri region\, understanding connectivity between coal seam gas (CSG) reservoirs and overlying aquifers is important for assessing potential groundwater impacts and addressing community concerns\, given that the Gunnedah Basin\, which hosts the coal seams\, underlies key Great Artesian Basin (GAB) units such as the Pilliga Sandstone. \nThis study applies an integrated workflow combining airborne electromagnetics (SkyTEM)\, seismic interpretation\, K/Ar dating of igneous intrusions\, and hydrochemical and environmental tracer datasets (including noble gases and groundwater age tracers). The SkyTEM survey (~2\,765 line km; >60 flight lines) provides high-resolution constraints on subsurface architecture\, enabling mapping of faults\, intrusions\, and key stratigraphic boundaries to ~400 m depth. \nAEM results and K/Ar ages of intrusive activity were integrated with seismic and geological data to develop conceptual hydrogeological models identifying potential connectivity pathways. Hydrochemical and tracer data were then used to test for evidence of hydraulic connection across formations and basins\, allowing structural interpretations to be evaluated against groundwater signatures. \nResults indicate that geological structures are widespread\, but their hydraulic significance and therefore their potential influence on connectivity varies across the study area. \nThe presentation focuses on the Narrabri Gas Project area while also addressing broader GAB connectivity questions. The integrated workflow provides a transferable framework for reducing uncertainty in subsurface fluid flow\, with relevance to hydrocarbon studies\, hydrogen storage\, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)\, and related applications. \n  \nEvent Details:\nDate: Thursday\, June 25th 2026 \nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Stamford Plaza Brisbane \nBookings close 5 pm Tuesday\, June 23rd 2026 unless sold out prior. \n

SUMMARY:PESA QLD: Barry Goldstein Medal Lecture Tour March 2026 – Bruce Ainsworth
DESCRIPTION:Honouring the Humble Clinoform: Towards a Reservoir Modelling Best Practice\nPresented by Dr. Bruce Ainsworth\, recipient of the 2025 Barry Goldstein Medal \nClinoforms have fascinated Bruce since first pondering their economic significance in Shell Research Laboratories in the early 1990’s. These dipping stratal surfaces are ubiquitous in the stratigraphic record but often ignored with regard to their potential significant influence on fluid flow in the subsurface. Whether you are interested in hydrocarbon or groundwater extraction\, carbon sequestration\, or sediment hosted uranium\, you need to know if you are dealing with clinoforms. Clinoforms can have significant impacts on resource recovery and emplacement. Ignoring them or simply not recognising them can have profound (usually) negative impacts on project value. Key to making clinoforms your best friend are three steps; 1) recognition\, 2) uncertainty management\, and 3) targetted modelling. This talk will guide the clinoform user through these steps and suggest a reservoir modelling best practice for honouring the humble clinoform. \n  \nTickets on sale now.\nStandard ticket pricing will go into affect on Friday\, 27th February 5:00 PM. \nPlease note\, this event will commence at 12:30pm (arrival from 12:00pm).
