Abstract:
New South Wales contains seven sedimentary basins with petroleum resource potential. Despite the fact that oil and gas shows are common in the eastern basins and two subcommercial gas wells have been completed, the state remains virtually unexplored. The seven basins are the Oarence-Moreton, Darling, Eromanga, Gunnedah, Murray, Surat-Bowen, and Sydney Basins. Each of the basins has rock units suitable for reservoirs, seals and hydrocarbon sources together with evidence of maturation and structures suitable for trap development. NSW offers real opportunities for the discovery of gas or coal seam methane with some potential in the east coast basins for small oil discoveries.
