Abstract:
Several major tectonic events have occurred in the New England Orogen from the Late Carboniferous to the Late Triassic. At the same time, subsidence or uplift were occurring in the adjacent Gunnedah Basin in northem New South Wales. The tectonic events in the orogen can be linked to a complicated subsidence history for the Gunnedah and the overlying Surat basins, and tectonic subsidence curves show how the basins have responded to the tectonic events. The tectonic subsidence pattems enable several discrete phases of basin formation to be defined. Tectonic processes that contributed to basin formation occur on a scale much greater than that of the play elements within the basin, and hence an understanding of these events will lead to an enhanced ability to predict the timing and distribution of the key petroleum elements within the basin
