PESA WA: November Evening Talk – Paradigm lost: Mentorc paves the way for more Barrow Group topset gas discoveries on the Exmouth Plateau

Thursday, 7 November, 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Guest Speaker: Andrew Pitchford and Phil Woods

Andrew Pitchford: General Manager Subsurface; Western Gas Andrew has over 32 years’ experience encompassing exploration and development geology, audits and certifications, geophysical interpretations and has advanced 3D geological modelling skill. In the last 15 years Andrew has worked on projects for clients mainly in the Asia Pacific area, although the project location has ranged from Australia to New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Thailand, Africa, Yemen, Iran and other Middle East countries, China, Egypt, and the North Sea. These projects have involved conventional and unconventional oil and gas resource estimates and modelling, including for coal seam gas and modelling for CO2 geosequestration.   Phil Woods: Senior Geophysicist; Western Gas Phil is a geophysicist with a career spanning 37 years' experience in exploration and development geophysics. He Joined Elf Aquitaine in 1981 and subsequently held senior technical positions in Norcen International and Cultus Petroleum. Phil was involved in several discoveries and developments including Jabiru and Challis oil fields (Timor Sea, Australia) and the giant Mangala oil field in Rajasthan

“Paradigm lost: Mentoc paves the way for more Barrow Group topset gas discoveries on the Exmouth Plateau”

Presented by Andrew Pitchford and Phil Woods

The evolution of the Western Gas exploration portfolio has gone hand in hand with the evolution of the Equus Development. Both required abandonment of the traditional mindset and a refocus on the fundamentals.

The exploration work led to the recognition that a large stratigraphic – structural trap lay-up-dip from the Mentorc Gas field. This prospect, Sasanof, has the potential to be as large as any discovery on the Exmouth Plateau to date. While the development work led to project resizing coupled with an innovative collaborative partnering with McDermott and Baker Hughes to achieve a low capex, globally competitive LNG and gas supply. In August 2019, WG appointed Goldman Sachs as the company’s financial adviser in connection with its partnering process.

This discussion will briefly describe the evolution and current status of the development of the Equus project, starting with a summary of the geoscience elements that comprise the Equus project. However, the main focus will be exploration with an emphasis on the evolution of the Cretaceous Sasanof prospect.

Mentorc, drilled in 2009, was the first successful discovery in the top sets of the top Lower Barrow Group delta front. This top Lower Barrow Group (Berriasian) play had been abandoned since the unsuccessful tests by Investigator-1 in 1978, Pinhoe and Royal Oak (though these later two were successful at deeper levels). Seismic attributes at Mentorc that indicate gas sands highlight up-dip prospectivity at Sasanof, a combined stratigraphic and structural trap.
