PESA WA invites you to our April evening talk with guest speaker Rosine Riera, PhD student at the Centre for Energy Geoscience (University of Western Australia) and her talk on:
“Integrated study of the Oligo-Miocene carbonate overburden of the Northern Carnarvon Basin (NWS, Australia)“
Presented by Rosine Riera
Carbonate sedimentation has dominated across Australia’s extensive North West Shelf since the Paleocene. In this new integrated study we gather field, well and seismic data to reconstruct the Oligo-Miocene evolution of the carbonate sequences of the Northern Carnarvon Basin. We infer that distally steepened ramps composed of deep water mudstones evolved to a coral-rich rimmed platform during the Middle Miocene. Carbonate sedimentation is then annihilated by a siliciclastic pulse at the end of the Middle Miocene. These results provide the opportunity to discuss the factors controlling the sedimentation in the Carnarvon Basin, and the influence of local and regional paleo-climatic, paleo-oceanographic and paleo-geographic events.
