DESCRIPTION:Coorikiana Sandstone Play\, Cooper Basin region\nCarmine Grasso \nSouth Australia’s Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) \n  \nAbstract\n\nPetroleum exploration of the Cooper/Eromanga basin commenced in 1954 with the granting of an exploration licence to Santos\, the dominant focus for operators being gas resources of the deeper Permian reservoirs of the Cooper Basin\, which are overlain by the younger shallower Eromanga Basin. However\, a recent industry focus to specifically target the shallower reservoirs\, viz.\, Coorikiana Sandstone of the Eromanga Basin\, has yielded rewarding outcomes\, thus adding to the Cooper/Eromanga basin reputation as Australia’s most prolific onshore oil and gas basin. \nThe early Cretaceous Coorikiana Sandstone has been proven to be a bona fide exploration\, appraisal and development target in the South Australian sector of the Cooper/Eromanga basin. This presentation of the play is aimed at providing explorers with a better understanding of the geology and potential importance of these regressive marine shoreface sandstone reservoirs. Recent activity in the South Australian portion of the Cooper/Eromanga basin has proven successful via low-cost shallow drilling campaigns\, focusing on delivering additional production rate and reserves for both oil and gas. DESCRIPTION:PESA SA Core and Gross Depositional Environment Mapping Workshop:  \n“A new look at South Australia’s onshore Otway Basin”  \nChris Cubitt\, Rob Kirk\, Tim Rady and Sharon Tiainen  \nSA Drill Core Reference Library\, Tonsley \nFriday November 17th 2023 \n9am – 4pm\n  \n  \nFollowing the success of the previous year’s events\, PESA SA/NT is pleased to announce an expanded itinerary this year with a full-day core workshop at the South Australia Drill Core Reference Library in Tonsley on Friday 17th November 9am – 4pm. \nThis year’s workshop takes an exciting new focus – quick look gross depositional environment (GDE) mapping of all key intervals in the onshore Otway Basin in SA. \nChris Cubitt\, Rob Kirk\, Tim Rady and Sharon Tiainen will host the workshop with participants first gaining an understanding of key cores\, with a focus on defining depositional environments. Subsequently in the afternoon\, teams will be guided through the construction of interval specific gross depositional environment maps with integrated seismic\, wireline and core data at hand. \nParticipants will be encouraged to put pens to paper\, explore new concepts\, derive quick opinions and challenge regional concepts and exploration models. \nThe workshop will finish around 4.00pm with an optional stop at the Tonsley Hotel. \nWho should attend? DESCRIPTION:PESA SA Field Trip\nSedimentary Evolution of a South Australian Cambrian Rift\nFrom a carbonate ramp to siliciclastic fluvio-deltaics in a tectonically active Cambrian rift. How did the Delamerian clastic basin fill evolve and why? \nSaturday 11th and Sunday 12th November 2023 \nAn opportunity to investigate the Cambrian evolution of South Australia through the spectacular coastal exposures in the Fleurieu peninsula.  \nRhodri Johns and Elinor Alexander will lead the field trip. \nThe full excursion is two days. Participants will have the option of participating in either or both days. \nThe first day will be spent examining the carbonate ramp deposits of the Sellick Hill Formation and the clastic turbidites of the Carrickalinga Head Formation at Myponga and Carrickalinga. Here signs of the early evolution of the Delamerian rift will be viewed. \nThe second day will be spent viewing the spectacular outcrops of The Fishery Beach section on the south coast near Cape Jervis. Here a magnificently exposed prograding clastic sequence\, including Carrickalinga Head turbidites and the shallow marine deltaics of the Backstairs Passage Formation\, are overlain by the incised valley fill turbidites of the Cooalinga Member. \n  \n\nSaturday\, November 11th.\n\nSelf-drive to meet at the south Myponga Beach car park for a 10am start. \nOnce we have examined Sellick Hill Formation exposures\, it’s a short drive to Carrickalinga Head to spend more time looking at the turbidite facies\, to finish at about 4. \nAttendees may wish to partake of a cleansing ale at Fork Tree Brewery\, Carrickalinga\, on the way back to Adelaide – a separate purchase. \n  \nYou may also wish to make a weekend of it on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula – organizing your accommodation on Saturday 11th. \n  \n\nSunday\, November 12th.\n\nSelf-drive to meet at the Fishery Beach car park – 5km south of Cape Jervis\, for a 10am start. \nWe will then walk along the coastal sections to finish at about 3. \nAttendees may wish to partake of a cleansing ale at Kick Back Brewing\, Aldinga\, on the way back to Adelaide – a separate purchase. \n  \nPESA Members: $20 per day. DESCRIPTION:The CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS): what it is and how it was applied at Moomba\nJohn Kaldi\nEmeritus Professor & CO2CRC Distinguished Scientist\nUniversity of Adelaide \nPaul Lyford\nReserves & Resources Manager\nSantos Limited \n  \nAbstract\n\nThis talk aims to create awareness of the recently published Guidelines for Applications of the CO2 Storage Resources Management System (SRMS). The SRMS was first published in 2017 and is now sponsored by the world’s foremost industry-focused professional societies\, including SPE\, AAPG\, SEG\, SPWLA\, EAGE\, SPEE and WPC. The Guidelines were released in June 2022 and are available from the SPE bookstore. Although a voluntary system\, the intent is that regulators\, government departments\, and financiers will be able to draw upon the experience of managing petroleum resources to advise on the management of carbon dioxide storage resources. \nThe SRMS is modelled on the Petroleum Resource Management System (PRMS). This was a deliberate choice aimed at making the development of storage resources clearer by drawing parallels with the well-known and well-understood process of maturing petroleum resources. The need to show that injected CO2 can be contained in a geologic formation is the key difference between exploring for CO2 storage resources and exploring for petroleum accumulations. \nAccording to the SRMS\, a CO2 storage resource is defined as the quantity (mass or volume) of CO2 that can be stored in a geologic formation. This storage can be in geologic structures (e.g.\, an anticline) or in regionally extensive dipping geologic formations. The storage mechanisms are geologic (structural and stratigraphic)\, residual\, solubility\, and mineral trapping\, and an inherent consideration in any storage resources is that displaced fluids (e.g.\, brine or hydrocarbons) are managed. \nA significant case study from Santos’ Moomba CCS project in the Cooper Basin is provided to demonstrate incorporation of SRMS in storage resource assessments. DESCRIPTION:Cretaceous depositional environment interpretation of offshore Otway Basin cores and wireline logs; application to the generation of basin-scale gross depositional environment maps\nPresented by: Chris Cubitt\nDeputy Director Geoscience & Exploration \nGeoscience and Exploration Branch | Energy Resources Division – DEM \nChris.Cubitt@sa.gov.au \n  \n  \nAbstract\n\nGas production from the Inner Otway Basin commenced in the early 2000s but the deep-water part of this basin remains an exploration frontier. Historically\, the understanding of plays in this region were largely model driven and therefore the ground-truthing of depositional environments (DE) and gross depositional environments (GDE) are critical. This aspect has been investigated for the Sherbrook Supersequence (SS) by the integration of legacy wireline and core data\, with regional 2D seismic facies mapping of new and reprocessed data from Geoscience Australia’s 2020 Otway Basin seismic program. Core observations were matched to wireline logs and seismic facies with resulting well based DE interpretations calibrated to seismic resolution Regional GDE intervals. Integration of well and seismic observations lead to the compilation of a basin-wide Regional GDE map for the Sherbrook SS. This GDE map indicates the distribution of Sherbrook SS play elements such as source rock\, seal and reservoir\, especially across the Deep Water Otway Basin where well data is sparse. \n\n\nEvent Details:\nThursday\,  September 28th\, 2023\nLuncheon: 12 pm for a 12:30 pm start \nPlace: Ayer’s House\, 288 North Tce\, Adelaide \nIncludes a 2-course lunch and drinks \nBookings close 1 pm Monday\, 25th August\nAny late bookings will incur an additional $20 fee.
