“Five myths and myth-conceptions of the northern Perth Basin”
Presented by Darren Ferdinando
Abstract:
Every fifteen to twenty years the northern Perth Basin undergoes a ‘transformation’ with new play discoveries being made and a renewed exploration effort. Starting with the discovery of the Yardarino and Dongara fields in the late 1960’s by WAPET, then the Woodada and Beharra Springs discoveries by Hughes & Hughes and Barrack Energy in the 1980’s and 1990’s, followed by the oily discoveries at Cliff Head, Hovea and Jingemia by Roc Oil, Arc Energy and Origin Energy respectively up to the most recent set of play-opening discoveries in the Kingia ‘Fm’ at Waitsia, West Erregulla and Beharra Springs Deep by AWE, Strike Energy and Beach Energy. Each of these periods of exploration has brought with it it’s own set of paradigms of what appears to work and what doesn’t. Many of these paradigms are based on a strong foundation of hearsay, over-simplification and myth-conception that over time have become ingrained into the way the basin is explored.
From source rocks to stratigraphy and fault traps to the miracle of clays this talk will look at five of these potential myths, exploring what they mean and whether they really are grounded in the truth as we know it today or if the myth has been busted by some of the newer data that has been obtained from the basin.
