“The Walyering Field – Story of missed hydrocarbons and reigniting interest in the Cattamarra Coal Measures

Presented by Matthew Wright, Strike Energy

The Walyering field is located in the onshore north Perth Basin and just a short drive from Perth and is situated close to existing gas pipelines. The reservoir is in the Jurassic aged Cattamarra Coal Measures and the original discovery well, Walyering-1 was drilled in 1971 and achieved test rates of up to 12.5 mmscf/d from two thick sand intervals. Follow up wells, inexplicably found the prime gas sands to be either tight or water wet. Walyering 5 and 6 was drilled in 2022 and have proven to flow wet gas at record rates from both the Cadda and Cattamarra Coal Measures. The key to this was the structural reinterpretation based on 3D seismic that was acquired in 2019 and allowed for missed hydrocarbon zones to be identified. 50 years since the initial discovery Walyering has again injected new life into the Perth Basin and demonstrates that there is still a lot more hydrocarbon to be unlocked.
