PESA WA SSIG 2nd Meeting
Friday, 21 February, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (Australia/Perth time)
$10.00
For the second meeting of the PESA WA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group, we will be looking at one of the classic cores from Western Australia, Hovea-3, along with core from the recently drilled Mondarra-7 well. While we will get to see the Permo-Triassic boundary in all it’s glory, the main focus of this meeting will be looking at changes to shallow marine conditions in a marine transgression, with the shallow marine sands of the aptly named Dongara Sandstone showing lovely well-rounded quartz grains with a delightful oil-staining in the up section, then moving up through time into a transgressive lag and then into the thick shale of the Kockatea Shale that is a very rich oil-prone source rock at it’s base before showing many subtle variations in character over it’s 400m+ of thickness. Hovea-3 is a must-see for any connoisseur of core.
Along with Hovea-3 we’ll also have Mondarra-7 out for viewing and will look at the differences between these cores that are only a few kilometres apart.
