PESA WA Field trip and core workshop 2021 – Gascoyne Delta
Saturday, 1 May - Sunday, 2 May (Australia/Perth time)
Free – $770
Core workshop and Field trip 27th April and 1st – 2nd May
The Gascoyne River delta and adjacent coastal plain is a useful partial analogue for the Mesozoic reservoir systems on the North West Shelf of Australia, and especially the Triassic Mungaroo-Brigadier, and Jurassic Plover/Legendre fluvial-deltaic reservoirs. This field workshop will examine the modern depositional processes and their products from the updip fluvial axis to the lower delta plain and adjacent coastal plain where wave-tide processes modify the river generated delta front, producing an overall mixed-influenced depositional system. Local variances include the overprint of seasonal storms, cyclones and background dryland processes (aeolian reworking and soil development). Offshore, the realm is dominated by tidal flows and storm and cyclone events in the northern half of Shark Bay. Discussion in the field will range from fundamental processes and depositional products, through to application of analogues to reservoir characterization and modelling, including its local hydrogeological importance (vital water source for Carnarvon and agriculture belt).
A core workshop will be held on Tuesday 27th April prior to the field workshop including a selection of Mesozoic fluvial-deltaic cores from the North West Shelf, and this will set the stage for discussion on key sedimentary structures and their criteria for recognition, and the importance of the depositional facies to reservoir characterization and modelling.
We strongly recommend that members attend both the Core workshop and the field trip in order to get the most out of the experience, however we understand that if you are travelling from interstate the timing may be awkward to attend both.
There will also be an evening talk on Thursday 22nd April given by the trip leaders, and this will be an introduction to the area and what will be seen on the field trip. It is recommended that you attend this talk. bookings can be made HERE
Please note that for insurance reasons this trip is only open to members. If you are not currently a member you will need to sign up before booking.
Prices:
Full: $770
Field trip only: $660
Core workshop only: $330 (Note: bookings will only open for the core workshop only option when we determine how many spare places there are based on field trip attendees not booking for it.)
Accomodation:
Ticket price is inclusive of camping at Wintersun holiday park. (1-3 nights depending on transport methods)
If camping is not your thing, then cabins are available at your own cost, although they book up quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment. Please let them know when you book that you will be with the PESA group, so they can locate us together.
Please do not arrange to stay anywhere else in Carnarvon as this complicates the logistics and the insurance. (an exception might be made for BIG4 plantation Caravan park which is about 500m away, but only if all cabins at Wintersun are already booked out)
Getting there:
The ticket price is not inclusive of Transport to Carnarvon. The trip begins and ends in Carnarvon. However recommended travel options are listed below. (Note: all transport while in Carnarvon is included. Everyone must be on the bus. No self driving to field localities)
Flights:
The flights in the table below are recommended by PESA. The Coach will meet and drop off to these flights. (if you are on these flights then only 1 night of accommodation is required)
Please book at Rex ASAP as the prices are likely to go up over time, and they may even sell out. (At time of posting, return flights were ~$400, but we have been warned that these will quickly go up to ~$800, and will then sell out.)
