PESA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group meeting
The Oxfordian of the Vulcan Sub-Basin
11th of September, 1 – 4pm Carlisle core library
For our fourth SSIG core workshop, we’re going to get our feet wet and start to look at some interesting shallow marine sedimentation out in the Vulcan Sub-basin. We’ll be looking at the Oxfordian (Late Jurassic) section in core from Bilyara-1, Tahbilk-1, Swift-1 and Crux-3, where we’ll see the ‘Montara Fm’ in all of it’s shallow water glory. These cores are all well preserved and show a series of beautiful parasequences transitioning from shale up to sands, all fully of wonderful trace fossils and sedimentary structures. We’ll have a look at the story that the trace fossils tell and whether they do support the interpretation of the ‘Montara Fm’ being deposited as a delta, or if there is a different way to interpret the environment that these sediments were deposited in.
For this workshop in addition to Vincent and Darren helping out we have MG Palaeo’s Amely Allgoewer, a specialist in core sedimentology and ichnology, joining us to assist in identifying the various ichnofacies in the core and the environments that they thrive in.
Don’t forget to book early as we have a hard limit of 30 attendees and every previous SSIG meeting has been fully booked out.
