PESA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group meeting
The Early Cretaceous Barrow Group
20th of November, 1 – 4pm Carlisle core library
The November meeting of the PESA WA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group will be held on Friday 20th November, starting at 1pm and finishing at 4pm at the DMIRS Core Library in Carlisle, followed by refreshments afterwards at the Balmoral Hotel in Vic Park.
For the first anniversary of the SSIG meeting commencing we’ll take a trip to the Northern Carnarvon Basin and look at a beautiful set of cores that take us through the Early Cretaceous Barrow Delta and shows the change in facies from the delta plain across to the deep water turbidites. Starting with the cored section in Coniston-1 we’ll look at the coarse-grained crossbeds of the delta plain, then move across to the outer shelf section in Mentorc-2, slip down the lower slope and look at gravity flow sands and Mass Transport Complexes in South Pepper-1 and Bowers-1, before we settle into the deep water turbiditic sand lobes in North Scarborough-1.
After the success in the last meeting of having Amely Allgoewer helping Darren and Vince tell the story of the Montara ‘delta’, they’re going to be joined by Woodside’s ex Geology Advisor, Rob Seggie. Rob has an extensive knowledge of the Northern Carnarvon Basin, and these set of wells in the Barrow Delta in particular, and will walk us through the evolution of the delta and the subtle, but important, features in the core that help to unravel the interesting geological story that these rocks have to tell.
Don’t forget to book early as we have a hard limit of 30 attendees and every previous SSIG meeting has been fully booked out.
