PESA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group Meeting – March 2021
Friday, 5 March @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (Australia/Perth time)$10
PESA Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Interest Group meeting
Late Permian to Upper Devonian of the Petrel Sub-Basin
5th of March, 1 – 4pm Carlisle core library
For the first meeting of the SSIG for 2021 we’re going to start with a selection of cores from the far north of Australia with a selection of cores from the Petrel Sub-basin looking at Permian to Devonian aged sediments. More importantly though, we’ve selected a wonderful grab bag of depositional environments from tidal channels to shallow marine clastics through to mixed carbonates and clastics. The wells to be viewed in this meeting are Petrel-5, Barnett-1, Blacktip North-1 and Bonaparte-1A, which should keep even the most jaded of geologists entertained for an afternoon. You can admire the oil in Barnett-1 and ponder why the oil is distributed there in the way we see it, marvel at the preserved porosity in Petrel-5 from well over 3000m depth, count the clay drapes in Blacktip North-1 and see how much of a lunar cycle is preserved in a series of tidal channels, or just casually stroll up and down the Bonaparte-1A core and see the carbonate and clastic marine depositional environments from the Middle Carboniferous to Late Devonian.
4pm Balmoral Hotel, Victoria park
A chance to network with the other attendees and continue the discussion over drinks. PESA supplies nibbles, but drinks are at your own expense.
