PESA SA/NT Technical Luncheon, Thursday 29th August – The Birkhead Formation: a joint chemostratigraphy-biostratigraphy case study

Thursday, 29 August, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Guest Speaker: Stuart Munday & Carey Hannaford

Carey Hannaford started her career in 1998 as an exploration geoscientist at Santos. In 2004 she transferred to the stratigraphy department to train as a palynologist. Carey joined MGPalaeo (formally Morgan Palaeo Associates) as a senior palynologist in 2010 before becoming a co-owner of the company following the retirement of founder Roger Morgan and co-owner Jeffery Goodall’s move to join Carnarvon Petroleum.  MGPalaeo now also offer petrology and sedimentology services, and have expanded their areas of expertise to include all Australian basins as well as SE Asia, New Zealand and the Middle East. While their main office remains in Perth, Carey continues to work remotely from Adelaide. The last 2½ years Stuart Munday has been working as for Chemostrat based in New Zealand and in Perth working on projects throughout the APAC region. Prior to this he was based in Wellington as a senior geologist for New Zealand Oil and Gas primarily responsible for their offshore Canterbury assets. Before this he’d worked for BG Group for 9 years, initially in a country entry team and then executing an exploration and appraisal program in Algeria, with subsequent postings in Tripoli and at QGC in Brisbane. His formative years was also focused on Africa. After completing his Bachelor and Petroleum Masters, Stuart worked for ECL for 7 years collaborating with several Sub-Saharan countries undertaking regional basin analysis in order to promote and develop their oil & gas industry. Stuart also had a 2-year stint with Roc Oil working on their North Sea assets.

PESA SA/NT August Technical Luncheon

The Birkhead Formation: a joint chemostratigraphy-biostratigraphy case study

When: Thursday 29th August, 12pm for 12:30

Where: Ayers House, 288 North Tce, Adelaide

Speakers: Stuart Munday (Chemostrat) &  Carey Hannaford (MGPalaeo)

Chemostrat and MGPalaeo will be presenting a joint stratigraphic – provenance study of the late Jurassic Birkhead Formation from the Snatcher Field area, northern Eromanga Basin. New palynological analysis has been integrated with inorganic geochemistry finger-printing to enable the subdivision of this problematic formation with increased confidence and resolution.  The data also provides new insight into changes in the environment of deposition and sediment provenance, evident from the spore-pollen assemblage and mineralogical makeup reflected in the geochemistry. This includes the recognition of reworking of Permian taxa, and an increase of volcanogenic material with intermediate tendencies within the formation consistent in all wells. New heavy mineral and zircon geochronology data also acquired for this study highlights the nature and age of provenance components, including penecontemporaneous populations.

Lunch will include a 2-course meal and drinks

Please note that bookings will close at 5pm on Monday 26th August

Sponsor: Beach, Santos, Department for Energy and Mining

Speaker: Stuart Munday (Chemostrat) and Carey Hannaford (MGPalaeo)
