PESA SA/NT Field Trip: Old Noarlunga

Sunday 10th November 2019

PESA SA/NT is pleased to announce a new geological fieldtrip to Old Noarlunga on Sunday 10th November, 10.00 – 12.30 expertly led by David Grybowski

The charming old town of Old Noarlunga (only a 40 minute drive south of Adelaide) is situated on a point bar of the Onkaparinga River. The riverbank allows us to examine cliff face exposures of rocks associated with the Ochre Cove-Clarendon Fault and the Noarlunga Embayment.

The coastal region from Adelaide to Sellicks Beach, and from Gulf St Vincent east into the Adelaide Hills, is dominated by embayments with southwest-trending faults on their south flank.  These faults are associated with the grain of the Delamerian fold belt of the Adelaide rift complex.  The embayments are asymmetric half grabens containing wedges of gently southerly dipping Cenozoic rocks that thicken toward the faults and overlie Precambrian and Cambrian sedimentary rocks – the latter outcrop on the high side of the faults.  The embayments contain Eocene and later sedimentary rocks of the St Vincent Basin – terrestrial, fluvial and marine, clastic and carbonates.

During a couple of hours easy stroll starting at and returning to the Market Square of Old Noarlunga, we will examine – from across the river – the Neoproterozoic Angepena Formation of the Umberatana Group (~650 ma), the Eocene Blanche Point Formation (~40 ma), and Holocene-age fluvial deposits, which are presently cut through by the Onkaparinga River. The nature of the unconformable contacts between these formations is hidden from view but may be inferred from the outcrop and the regional geology. There is also an opportunity to walk upon and directly examine the sedimentology of the Angepena Formation where ripples and perhaps mud cracks are visible.

Start time: meet 10 a.m. at the Long Shot coffee shop, 50 Patapinda Rd, Old Noarlunga for Sunday morning caffeination. There is plenty of parking nearby on the Market Square.

Approximate finish 12.30. Optional lunch (at own cost) at the Old Noarlunga Hotel afterwards.

Cost: $10 for PESA Members, $5 Students & Retirees, $20 for Non-Members.

Bookings close Thursday 7th November. Places are limited so please book early.
