PESA QLD: Technical Luncheon, 24th October – Prof. Ray Johnson
Thursday, 24 October, 2019 @ 12:15 pm - 2:00 pm
This month, PESA QLD is happy to welcome Professor Ray Johnson from the University of Queensland to present a technical luncheon entitled “What we have we learned and where do we need to go to improve hydraulic fracturing outcomes in Australian unconventional reservoirs”.
Professor Johnson has recently presented a related topic at APPEA conference earlier this year, and has expanded the presentation with new content for the PESA audience.
The Technical Lunch will be held at the Brisbane Hilton Hotel, in the “Victoria’s Room” with access from the Hilton Main Foyer on level 6.
For detailed directions, see explanation below.
Please note the Early Bird ticket pricing cutoff times described below.

Adaptation of North American strategies to Australia’s complex, and highly stressed unconventional areas has resulted in less than adequate performance to progress further investment into widespread development into resources such as low-permeability coals, deep coals, and basin-centred gas plays. In several 2018-2019 presentations I and other authors explored this topic as related to individual plays. So as a whole, what have we learned and what does that mean in improving opportunities for successful stimulation in more complex unconventional plays?
This presentation will revisit the obvious differences between Australian and North American stress settings, and the problems manifested by those differences in hydraulic fracture containment and behaviour. Further, the results of complementary strategies will be presented relative to fundamental hydraulic fracturing and geomechanical principles. Finally, this presentation will highlight the unique problems, discuss results of emerging potential solutions, and provide insight into areas of ongoing research towards developing a vast supply of potential unconventional resources in low-permeability coals, deep coals, and basin-centred gas plays.
Tickets for the Technical Luncheon can be purchased below.
Please be advised of the early bird cutoff date.
Early bird pricing will remain available up until Wednesday 16th October, 5:00 PM after which, standard pricing will come into effect.
