Presentation Abstract:
Digital Earth – towards a digital twin of Queensland geoscience information
Australia’s federal and state geological surveys have undergone a transformation in the acquisition and provision of data for minerals exploration, through programs such as the >$100M Exploring for the Future initiative.
In Queensland, this step-change has been accompanied by the modernisation and transformation of legacy data into easily consumed digital formats.
Large volumes of precompetitive data are now available to industry and have been instrumental in attracting investment and enabling companies to identify regions for exploration.
However, massive data also presents a challenge in how it can be discovered and accessed, as well as the inability to visualise such data in a single environment due to hardware limitations.
In this project, we apply technology originally developed for the gaming industry to build a visualisation environment that takes advantage of the vast volumes of available geoscience data.
The project is a collaboration between the Sustainable Minerals Institute, Euclideon and the Queensland Department of Resources.
The objectives were to automatically consume and visualise geological, geophysical, geochemical and infrastructure data so that the minerals exploration industry can easily access, search and use it as an interpretation and decision-making tool.
